Understanding Breast Cancer Screening: What Every Woman Should Know

Dr. Sara MalikApril 30, 2026

Early detection saves lives. Learn when and how breast cancer screening should be done, and why mammograms matter after age 40.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Pakistan. The good news is that early detection dramatically improves survival — when caught at stage I, five-year survival exceeds 95%.

When should screening start?

For women at average risk, we recommend:

  • Monthly self-examination from age 20
  • Clinical breast examination every 1–3 years from age 25
  • Annual mammogram from age 40 (earlier with family history)

Warning signs to watch for

See a specialist promptly if you notice a new lump, skin dimpling, nipple discharge or inversion, or persistent breast pain.

If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, please request an appointment for a personalised screening plan.
