Chemotherapy: What to Expect During Treatment
Dr. Ahmed RazaApril 25, 2026
A clear, practical guide for patients and families starting chemotherapy — from first session to managing side effects.
Starting chemotherapy can feel overwhelming. This guide explains what actually happens, so you and your family feel prepared.
Before your first session
Your oncologist will run baseline blood tests and may place a port for easier IV access. Eat a light meal beforehand and bring a friend or family member.
During treatment
Each session lasts 1–4 hours. You will be in a comfortable chair, monitored by a nurse. Most patients read, watch a film, or rest.
Common side effects
- Fatigue (usually 2–4 days after a cycle)
- Nausea — modern anti-emetics control this very well
- Hair thinning or loss (typically 2–3 weeks in)
- Lowered immunity — avoid crowds and wash hands often
Our nursing team is on call between sessions. Never hesitate to ring us if a fever above 38°C develops.
